Songfacts®:

  • The title of this song translates as "My Farewell". Although written in German, the music was composed in England. Lebewohl is a poem by Johann Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862). Known as Ludwig Uhland, he is fairly well-known in Germany. This poem was set to music by Prince Albert, Consort of Queen Victoria. It appears to have been completed and probably started in 1847, at Buckingham Palace. Although Albert spoke English, at home he and Victoria spoke German.
  • In 1883, an arrangement for brass band by William Winterbottom was published by S.A. Chappell of London. >>>
