Songfacts®:

  • This keyboard-driven track finds Prince describing how to keep romance alive by small acts of affection. It features vocals from British singer Lianne La Havas, who also provides the mid-song monolgue about how the Purple One has been trapped in suspended animation.

After Prince covered La Havas' track "Lost & Found" he invited the songstress to jam with him at Paisley Park. When they first spoke on the phone, the Purple maestro told her he liked to imagine he was the older man in her song "Age."
  • Prince took the Saturday Night Live stage on November 1, 2014 for his first appearance since February 4, 2006. He performed this song, the PlectrumElectrum track "Marz" and a cover of Alice Smith's "Another Love" in an eight minute jam during the middle of the broadcast. The SNL musical guests traditionally have two short performances during the program; Prince was the first artist in history to have an extended spot during the middle of the sketch show.

Prince wasn't the only one returning to the show after a long absence. The episode was hosted by Chris Rock, who specifically requested that the Purple One be the musical guest.
  • La Havas recalled the collaboration to Q magazine: "We were just hanging out at Paisley Park. He played me some songs, and he played me 'Clouds' and said, 'Can you sing on it, please?'"

It was an exacting process in the studio with Prince's engineer. "He would press record and then stop it if it was slightly out of tune," La Havas recalled. "I just did it until I got it. And then Prince would come in sand say, 'That sounds nice.'"
