Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Prince addresses the actress Salma Hayek's infant daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault. In December 2005, Hayek directed a music video for Prince's song "Te Amo Corazon."
  • The song makes a clever reference to the actress Penelope Cruz: "If Penelope wants to cruise there ain't no way that we ain't gon' dance."

In 2007, People magazine called Cruz "Prince's #1 Fan" because of the enthusiasm she showed during an intimate performance by Prince. The Purple One abandoned the stage during "I Never Loved a Man" to sit next to the excited actress and strum his guitar.
