Songfacts®:

  • Sunday mornings are typically when churchgoers congregate, but in this song, our hero passes up church, since "every minute's more holy."

The lyric was written by Pete Brown, known for his work with Cream. Brown told Songfacts: "It's about a working-class person who does what he does and works hard and plays hard."
  • This was influenced by a 1946 song by Big Joe Turner called "Sunday Morning Blues," where Turner sings about going to church every Sunday to make peace with his maker, then going home to make love to his wife. Lyricist Pete Brown is a big fan of Turner, and when he heard the gospel-inflected track Gary Brooker came up with, he looked to Turner for inspiration.
