  Coming out of his coma, he didn't know who he was, but he knew he was wanted and cared for. That feeling, tinged with the uncertainty and frustration that came with his memory loss, stuck with him and informed his songwriting throughout his career as frontman for the Sex Pistols and PiL. In many ways, his bout with meningitis strengthened his resolve. "It's constantly running in my mind throughout my life, and I won't be satisfied for second best," he said in his Songfacts interview.
