Songfacts®:

  • Race The Tide is the stage name of Los Angeles native Jesse Macht, whose brother is the actor Gabriel Macht. "The Enemy" is the first single from his debut using that moniker (he released two albums under his own name). Macht told Songfacts about the track:

"My mother, my sister, and I've been blessed and plagued with vivid recurring dreams our entire lives and it feels as though, much of the time, it's hard to get much rest even when sleeping.

I wanted to write a love song, a diary entry to a fantasy self where I see myself in a baby-blue vintage Oldsmobile through Livingston, Montana and picture someone standing outside 'The Mint Bar and Grill,' under a neon pink sign that flashes 'Live Music,' smoking a cigarette and ready for an new and unbridled adventure.

The melody and feel of the song came to me after listening to Ryan Adams' "Stay With Me" and it reminded me of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game." I wanted to write a song that fit in that catalogue... Every mile poured out."
