Songfacts®:

  • 18-year-old country singer-songwriter Rachel Farley penned this song in a session with Ross Copperman and Heather Morgan. She told Radio.com that the initial inspiration was a "haunting track" that Copperman created on his Mac computer, which then led to Morgan coming up with the song title.
  • Farley explained the song's meaning to Radio.com: "I've always loved the awkwardness and excitement of a new relationship," she said. "That moment when you're riding around in a car, and you're not sure how the night's going to end–if ya'll are going to kiss, or hold hands. And that's what 'Midnight Road' is about, that whole hodgepodge of emotions that situation brings on. And at the same time, [the female character] is taking charge, saying, 'I dare you to take it to the next level.'"
