  • This song reflected Thom Yorke's disillusionment with Tony Blair's Labor government. He told Mojo magazine: "The song's ultimately about someone who is elected into power by people and who then blatantly betrays them - just like Blair did."
  • According to Q magazine April 2008, the song's fuzzy, narcoleptic sound was partly achieved by wrapping the microphones in eggboxes.
  • Yorke told Q that this song was much influenced by 1940s vocal group the Ink Spots.
