Songfacts®:

  • Cruel Summer is a collaborative studio album by members of the GOOD Music record label. Raekwon joins Pusha T, Common, 2 Chainz, CyHi Da Prynce, Kid Cudi and D'Banj on this cut. The Wu-Tang Clan rapper has collaborated several times with label chief Kanye West including his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track "Gorgeous" and "Lord, Lord, Lord" from 'Ye's "G.O.O.D. Friday" series.
  • Pusha T contributes verses to five tracks on the album, including this one, and he told Billboard magazine that a lot of the record was recorded separately with the label mates having intermittent meet-ups to determine which submitted verses would work together. "I felt like nothing was forced -- things were experimental at times, and I think you're gonna see that," he said. "You're gonna see the experimentation in guys like Common, who is looked at in a certain way. And it was so great to be on a record that may have a bit of a different flow than what you would know Common for… He's in there like 'This s--t is hot, this s--t is good, I'm getting on this!' It's so funny, because we're sitting there, dying laughing, and then it kicks in that Common is really writing his verse. Then he lays the verse. And then you realize his verse is sustained and better than yours! It's things like that that happen during those processes. It was so fun in that sense, because it was just all type of fun and surprises."
  • The song samples another Cruel Summer track, Kanye West, Pusha T, and Ghostface Killah's "New God Flow."
  • GOOD Music Hip-Hop recording artist CyHi Da Prynce features on two Cruel Summer cuts - this one and "Sin City." He told NME that he learnt a lot from recording with Kanye West. "I was actually one of the artists that was there throughout the whole process," he said. "I want this to be my breakout album. I can use the tools and ideas I learned frm 'Ye and incorporate them. It was a tedious process - a lot of things that I didn't know that he dis. It's a reason he has, like, 18 Grammys. 'Ye's in there all day every day."
