Songfacts®:

  • RaeLynn penned this song with Hailey Steele and Nicolle Galyon. It was written about a male friend and his then-girlfriend, who didn't care for her hanging with him. "They're not dating anymore," she admitted to Taste of Country. "They were actually for a long time and then they stopped dating, and then I was kinda talking to him for a little bit, and it just didn't work out. We're just better friends."
  • Released as RaeLynn's debut single, "Boyfriend" peaked at #32 on the Country chart.
  • RaeLynn was just 18 when the "Boyfriend" single was released. She started writing music at 13 and graduated high school early to pursue her career.
  • Despite some mixed opinions about its lasting musical value, "Boyfriend" enjoyed an unlikely second wind in 2025, thanks to TikTok. There, nostalgic fans - and a fair number of ironic ones - embraced the track, especially the lyric about Lubbock, Texas, which many listeners gleefully mishear as "Love Bug." Even RaeLynn joined in the fun.
