Songfacts®:

  • Rag'n'Bone Man recruited Pink to duet with him on this tender ballad. The pair trade soulful verses where they reflect on how they've changed for the worse since their free-spirited youth. Rag'n'Bone Man released the song as the second single from Life by Misadventure on April 9, 2021.
  • The song starts off with Rag'n'Bone Man recalling their uninhibited younger days when he and Pink were "wild and running" and feared nothing.

Pink enters a third of the way through with a verse in which she laments how they "sold their souls" and now feels discontented and out of place.

During the chorus, both artists express misgivings with their life now and their desire to disappear, "somewhere else, anywhere away from here."
  • Rag'n'Bone Man wrote "Anywhere Away From Here" with his musical director, Ben Jackson-Cook, along with Simon Aldred, Mark Crew and Dan Priddy. "This song is an honest reflection of wanting to disappear from uncomfortable situations - about the vulnerabilities that we all face," he said.
  • Pink first met Rag'n'Bone Man in Europe in 2017 not long after first hearing his 2016 hit song "Human." "By then I had already fallen in love with his voice, and when we met in person I quickly learned he has a beautiful soul, too," she said. "Since then, I knew I wanted to work with him one day."

The two crossed paths again at the 2020 BRIT Awards and it was there the "What About Us" hitmaker and the British singer-songwriter planned to work together. They both agreed this was the perfect song to collaborate on.
  • Rag'n'Bone Man produced the track with Ben Jackson-Cook and Mike Elizondo. The same trio also helmed his previous single, "All You Ever Wanted."
  • Joe Connor filmed the video at the Duke of York's Theater in London. Connor has also helmed clips for the likes of The Rolling Stones ("Living In A Ghost Town") and Kylie Minogue ("Music's Too Sad Without You").
  • Rag'n'Bone Man told HMV he originally recorded "Anywhere Away From Here" solo, but after he sent the song to Pink, she said straight away she'd love to jump on it. "Quite often with those things people say yes, and then a year later you're still asking," he said.

In fact, the American star recorded her vocals immediately, enabling Rag'n'Bone Man to release the duet as a single before dropping the album.
  • Rag N Bone Man and Pink performed the song with the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir at the 2021 BRIT Awards. Immediately released as a single, money raised from the new version is being donated to the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust and NHS Charities Together.

  • Bethany Chance from New Orleans, LouisianaOne particular aspect of feeling somewhere vulnerable, that I think this song speaks to, is performing on stage. I remember being young and carefree until, after I started taking piano lessons, I had to participate in recitals, eventually playing in church every single Sunday. I was paralyzed with stage fright and never knew that I could just say no. "When the lights go up " - how could we not realize this is what it's about. Think of other stars who talk about their crippling stage fright - like Carly Simon
