Songfacts®:

  • Not to be confused with the melodic Lionel Richie song of the same name, "All Night Long" is the first track on Rainbow's 1979 album. Co-written by lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and bass player Roger Glover, this surprisingly commercial number was released as a single on the Polydor label backed by "Weiss Heim."
  • A live version recorded at the inaugural Castle Donnington "Monsters Of Rock" festival, in August 1980, was included on the 2002 compilation album All Night Long: An Introduction. This runs to 6 minutes 22 seconds. The original version from Down To Earth runs to 3 minutes 53 seconds.
  • A song - undoubtedly based on personal experience - about a liaison with a more than willing female fan after a concert, this song came in for some criticism from feminists, but in SEXISM is no joke, an article by Robbi Millar published in the September 20, 1980 issue of Sounds, Roger Glover was quoted to the effect that "All Night Long" was "supposed to be funny." >>>

  • Glenn from TexasThe riff for “All Night Long” is catchy and the musicians are all obviously virtuosos, but the lyrics to this song are the worse ever. They don’t even come close to even rhyming. And Graham’s live singing was incredibly bad. It made you realize how many takes it must have taken in studio to just make it presentable. I didn’t see this particular lineup live, but I can only imagine how comical it would have been to watch Mr Bonnett trying to sing other Rainbow songs like “Stargazer” or “Gates Of Babylon”. A match made in hell.

  • Don from Sevierville, TnJoe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang) also recorded a different song with this same title. So did some country stars circa 2000/01 (but I don't remember their names - it was 2 to 4 guys).
  • Mike from Portage, MiDoes anyone know who the woman is in this classic video?
  • Robert from Atlanta, GaDown to Earth is also the title of Ozzy Osbourne's 2001 album.
  • Neil from London, --At the Monsters Of Rock festival singer Graham Bonnet substituted the line "I need a girl who can keep her head all night long" with; "I need a girl who can GIVE ME HEAD all night long"
Who said they weren't a sexist band.
