He recalled on his MySpace site: "Growing up in the South, I loved James Brown, Motown and Stax. So working with Sam Moore of Sam & Dave has been incredible." He added, "I always say the greats just get better. Sam sounds better than ever, and he's in his seventies now."

He explained to Reality Rocks that the stellar ensemble of artists he assembled on Moore's album was in his thinking when he planned Randy Jackson's Music Club. He said: "I made a record similar to this about a year ago with Sam Moore that had a bunch of great guest stars on it. I really loved making that, and Sam told me then, 'You know, this is how records were made back in the day.' So it was a little more like that, a fun experiment. What inspired me is, I never made a solo record but I always said that if I ever did, it would be like those old Quincy Jones records. He'd always have a compilation, because he's a producer, not a singer. And on this record I'm not really singing--thank God! For everyone out there, thank God! I've saved you guys from that!"
