Songfacts®:

  • This song was originally written and recorded by singer-songwriter Amy Fletcher for her 2005 album, Before I Was Born. A decade later, Reba McEntire covered the tune for her first gospel album, Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope. The country star recorded the record in the aftermath of her divorce from her husband of 26 years. She told The Boot that this song's lyrics rang truest to her of all the tracks that she recorded for the project.

Well, I need to be angry, I need to scream at the air
And the silence that's there when I pray, oh, when I pray
And I need to be frightened
    Until I find my anchor
    Until I find my shelter
    Until I find my Savior

"'From the Inside Out,' it's autobiographical," McEntire revealed. "When you're hurt and you need to heal, you've got to do it from the inside out … You've got to start at the heart, from the gut. It was very healing to sing that song. It hurt, but it was very healing."
  • Reba McEntire won her first ever Dove Award when she took home the prize for her Sing It Now: Songs of Faith and Hope album. "It's not mine. It's God's," Reba told the audience as she accepted the gong. "We'll give him all the glory. I'll put it up on the mantle, and think of him every time I look at it."
