Songfacts®:

  • Reba McEntire recorded this song for the mother-daughter drama Four Good Days. The film is about a heroin addict (Mila Kunis) who leaves a detox clinic and goes to live with her estranged mother (Glenn Close). Her mom fights tries to help her daughter stay clean for at least four days while navigating their tenuous bond.
  • "Somehow You Do" is a reminder that whatever hurdles we face, they'll be better days ahead. "I definitely feel like the fans can relate to the overall message of this song," said McEntire. "It does give hope when you're down, depressed and you're having problems in life. This song gives hope, and that's what we all need."
  • Diane Warren wrote the song, which contains a message that we're far stronger than we know. "Somehow You Do' is a song about hope, about how even through the times that are so hard and moments in your life that are so devastating, that somehow you will get through them and get to the other side," Warren told American Songwriter. "It is a song about strength of the human spirit and no voice can convey that as much as Reba."
  • This is the third Diane Warren-penned recorded by McEntire, following "I'll Be" and "What If." Warren chose McEntire to sing "Somehow You Do" because she imagined that Glenn Close's character in the film would be listening to her. "Reba has a strength about her, a resilience," she told Billboard. "It's in her persona and it's in her voice. You feel she's living every note and every word."
  • Filmmaker Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes, Risky Business, Black Swan) directed the video, which shows McEntire trekking a highway out in the Southern Californian desert. It is the second time Warren has written a song for one of Avnet's productions, following "Because You Loved Me," sung by Celine Dion for his Up Close and Personal movie.
  • McEntire performed the song at the Oscars in 2022, where it was nominated for Best Original Song. It lost to "No Time To Die" by Billie Eilish and Finneas from the James Bond movie of the same name.

It was an emotional experience for McEntire as her previous performance at the Oscars had been harrowing. In 1991, she sang the Best Original Song nominee "I'm Checkin' Out" from the film Postcards from the Edge just nine days after the plane crash that killed seven members of her band and her road manager.
  • Diane Warren: Relentless, a biographical documentary directed by Bess Kargman, chronicles the life of Diane Warren. The film traces her journey from a childhood in Van Nuys, California, to her meteoric rise as a celebrated songwriter and owner of a highly successful music publishing empire.

Filmed during the 2021 Oscar campaign, the documentary shows Warren elated when she was nominated for "Somehow You Do" and devastated when she lost for the 13th time.
