Songfacts®:

  • This is the closing track from disc 1 (Jupiter) of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth studio album. The mellow tune describes the feeling of despondency after a breakup and, according to frontman Anthony Kiedis, gives it to us straight. "It's one of those songs that takes you away and takes you to an emotional place that is just powerful and beautiful and real and not sugarcoated," he explained in the album's track-by-track interviews. "It's not one of those things that gives you any kind of false hope."
  • The Chili Peppers' longtime producer, Rick Rubin, arrived at the studio and heard the song playing in the distance and hoped it was coming from the band's rehearsal space. When he enthusiastically called the tune "light and jazzy," that became its working title.
  • Stadium Arcadium, the band's first #1 album, introduced the veteran funk rockers to a whole new generation of fans. When Kiedis learned some of the band's younger fans didn't dig this particular song, he chalked it up to a lack of life experience. "I think you have to be somewhat of a seasoned veterano of life experience to get on the train of 'Hey,'" he explained.
