  • Rescue Signals lead singer/guitarist Beau Tyler told us about this song: "Writing 'Angel' was the first time I had written with another writer. My friend and co-songwriter of the song, Nathan Morgan, had written a song years ago called 'Angel.' In the song he sang the lyrics, 'You're the only one who gets to be my angel.' I instantly became infatuated with the hook, but I wanted to take it in a different direction. Since he hadn't been performing the song for years, I asked him if I could build an entirely different song around that hook. He said yes, and it was the beginning of our collaboration together. The 'sin' that I committed, and thankfully so, was that I took his lyric completely out of the original context. I wanted to make the song a very obsessive love story, so I switched the ending hook to 'I'm the only one who gets to be your angel.'

I'd been wanting to do something like that for a very long time. In almost all love songs, they're either cookie-cutter or very self righteous. I wanted to find the beauty inside of the truth of post-breakup obsession. We've all given into the lesser side of ourselves, at least for a second, and said 'If I can't have you... then no one can.' Of course, that emotion is petty. It's jealous. It's morally complacent. But it's honest. And in some sort of sick way, I wanted to glorify that. It's going to sound weird, but in the darkest part of my mind, it was really sexy."
