Songfacts®:

  • Over elegant strings and a bassline groove, Rex Orange County urges himself to persevere in hard times. He talks about soldiering on and continuing what he's doing so he can accomplish his goals.

Keep it up and go on
Yeah, you're only holding out for what you want
I know that it's so frustrating
    It's enough, keep it up

The song came to Rex when he was in a bad place during the 2020 pandemic. He told Apple Music that feeling depressed and lethargic, he "wanted something motivational, some kind of an affirmation."
  • Looking to escape lockdown life in London, Rex drove to Amsterdam. There, he met up with Dutch singer-songwriter Benny Sings, whom he previously worked with on his 2017 breakout single "Loving Is Easy." During the two days they spent together, the pair wrote this song. In fact, those 48 hours proved so fruitful that Rex returned to Amsterdam to record the rest of his Who Cares? album.
  • Rex Orange Country co-directed the video with Alexandra Waespi and Bráulio Amado, shooting it in Amsterdam.
  • Who Cares? became Rex Orange County's first chart-topping UK album. The singer-songwriter's previous best placing had been the #5 that his previous set, Pony, reached.
