Letter From Afghanistan

Songfacts®:

  • Running to 4 minutes 18 seconds, this acoustic number by Richard Digance is part humour, part off-beat protest song; written as a letter home from a soldier serving in Afghanistan, it contrasts this unpopular so-called war with the dismal performance of the England Football Team during the World Cup:

"Eleven men who should be proud of wearing England shirts
Eleven men who only score when it comes to skirts..."

All the same, the men on the front line watched the game and cheered for England. The ending is both sad and bitter, something that is understandable because at the time this song was written there was no end in sight to the ill-fated Afghanistan venture which saw soldiers from Britain, America and elsewhere in action. >>>
