Songfacts®:

  • In this track written by Richie Sambora and Phil Lessens, Sambora confronts his demons head-on. The year before Aftermath of the Lowdown was released, he checked himself in for his second stint in rehab for alcohol abuse after finishing his three years of probation from a drunk-driving incident.

"I was a functioning alcoholic for sure," Sambora told Fuse TV. "Obviously, that was a part of my life. I would've been remiss if I set out to make an authentic record to leave that out. People would've called bullshit on that. They really would; let's face it. So, I figured I'd just set the story straight. That's what the Aftermath of the Lowdown is really about. I think that it was borne out of that.

I grew up playing the clubs, and that's the way I made my bones, and that's the way I found out who I was as an artist. At that point, you're drinking every night, and at that point it wasn't really a bad thing. It was like everybody was doing it. It took, dare I say, 35 years for my demons to actually catch up with me to a place where I had to slow down. You know, I've lived all these lyrics. There's not a lot between me and this music. This music is me. So that's the interesting part of this whole record. It's really authentic when it comes to that. So this lyric, the wisdom in it is, guess what, you can dump as much stuff as you want into your body, but you can only get so high and after that, you die."

  • Michele from Jersey I think Richie Sambora is a poet, he's honest & his music portrays that. He's a mix of grit & honey peppered with soulful. This album has everything & his songwriting is stellar. Its 2021 & I still play it all the time. Can't wait to see what he does next. The older he gets the better he delivers.
