Songfacts®:

  • Rickie Lee Jones told The Sun: "This song was inspired by Louis Michot, the Cajun violinist in Last Bayou Ramblers. I was inspired by a story he told me and started thinking. I have not written a love story in a long time. What would that be like?"

"The singer is living forever, singing her song to her lover about how they will always be alive. I wrote one of my favorite lines ever - 'our grandchildren will know us because they are made of our hearts.' As we get older these things matter. So these two lovers, there are going to always be holding hands, I decided."

"Then the title, I asked Louis and he said Valtz De Mon Pere, because I had told him this is inspired by things I imagine about your father. And then I added Lovers Oath, because that indeed is what it is."
