Songfacts®:

  • This song about breaking up was sung originally by its two songwriters, who both had married and later split up with famous spouses. The late Peter Allen was married to Liza Minnelli from 1966 to 1972. He recorded this in 1979 on his I Could Have Been a Sailor album which also features his version of "Don't Cry Out Loud," made famous by Melissa Manchester. The other co-writer Carole Bayer Sager originally sang it.

She had been married to Burt Bacharach, and lived with Marvin Hamlisch for about a year. Sager sang it on her self titled 1977 album which also included her version of Bette Midler's classic "You're Moving Out Today." Rita Coolidge, who was married and later split from Kris Kristoferson, recorded it in 1979 and had a top 40 hit with the song. She also sang "Fool That I Am," which was also co-written by Carole Bayer Sager. >>
