Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from the soundtrack to the 2014 Gina Prince-Bythewood directed romantic drama, Beyond the Lights, this features Rita Ora singing of being grateful for the lessons she's learned from overcoming adversity:

    I'm grateful for the storm
    Made me appreciate the sun
I'm grateful for the wrong one
Made me appreciate the right one
    I'm grateful for the pain
For everything that made me brave
  • The song was written by Diane Warren. The legendary songwriter told Billboard magazine: "Gina Prince-Bythewood made an amazing movie that shows what really goes on beyond the lights of fame. I am so happy she had me write this song. I'm so proud of it and Rita Ora did an amazing vocal. I think it can be a career song for her. It shows a whole different side to her."
  • Despite being nominated for Best Original Song at the 2015 Academy Awards (it lost out to Selma's ("Glory"), this flopped commercially. It appears Gina Prince-Bythewood regrets her decision to ask Ora to perform the song. She said, "Wish I didn't as she didn't promote (the) song at all."
