• This was the lead single from Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas' second solo album, Cradlesong.
• The phrase "her diamonds" is a metaphor for a girl's tears. In an interview with Neil McCormick on Twitter, Thomas explained: "It's actually a song about a girl who is very ill. It's a song about empathy and dealing with that with someone you love." The Matchbox Twenty frontman is referring to his Puerto-Rican wife Mari, who suffers from a rare autoimmune disease.
• Actress Alicia Silverstone starred in the song's music video. In the 1990s, Silverstone earned the nickname "the Aerosmith chick" after starring in the band's promos for "Cryin'," "Crazy" and "Amazing."
• Mari provided some of the backup vocals for this song.
• Thomas told The Canadian Press that his goal is always for his lyrics to transcend the personal. He explained: "My wife has an auto-immune disease and me and her deal with that for the last six or seven years. But at the end of the day, it's really a song about being empathetic, when the person closest to you is going through something and you can't do anything to make it better except to be there for them. I think a lot of times my job is to take myself out of the song, and write about something intensely personal but write about the residual emotion of that, like how does that make me feel, because everyone can relate to that. If you write about the way something makes you feel, that becomes more universal."
• Silverstone had to be fitted for a plastic body cast as the frozen woman in the Dave Meyers-directed clip. Time ran out before the team could get a cast of her face, but luckily she already had one made from her role in Batman & Robin 12 years earlier. A little grease on the exterior gave the costume its icy appearance.
• In a 2020 interview with Songfacts, Thomas spoke further about how personal lyrics can have a universal appeal: "I think everyone has things happening in their lives all the time. I find that even if something I'm personally going through is just happening to me, the way those things make you feel is something most people can understand. Helpless, hopeful, angry, sad, elated, it's the residual emotion to the event that everyone is really relating to and attaching to their own lives."
