Songfacts®:

  • This track from Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines album is directed and dedicated to his actress wife Paula Patton. The couple met at a teen nightclub when they were just 14 and have been together ever since. The song recounts the early years of their romance and how they spent a year apart after Thicke messed up. The couple finally married in 2005, the same year that Paula had her first acting role, a small part in the Will Smith movie Hitch. Patton's big break came in 2006 when she landed the pivotal role of Claire Kuchever in the Denzil Washington sci-fi thriller Déjà Vu. She has since appeared in such films as Swing Vote, Mirrors, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Patton has also dabbled in music, providing additional vocals for Usher on his 2004 album Confessions as well as the female vocal counterpart on the song "Can U Handle It?" which was penned by her husband. She also appeared in Robin Thicke's videos for "Lost Without You" and "Love After War" as well as the clip for Queen Latifah's "Fast Car."
  • Paula Patton told MTV News that this ballad is one of her standout Blurred Lines tracks. "I have a lot of favorites — it would be hard to say one — but he has a song called '4 the Rest of My Life,' which is a story based on our love 'cause we've known each other since we were teenagers," said the actress. "That always gets me a little choked up."
