Songfacts®:

  • This track features two verses from Nas in which the rapper gets "deep" about the current state of affairs in America, including police violence against black people and the Clinton-Trump presidential election. Nas explained on Genius:

"Robin asked me to talk about the world today. Point of the song is with all the injustice going on we was trying to figure out how to survive. Small time arguments between a woman and man should be put to a cease, because people are dying. Physiological warfare."
  • The song was produced by Rich Skillz, who also produced Thicke's 2009 album Sex Therapy: The Session.
  • The track was originally about relationships, but when Thicke decided to take it a step further, he immediately thought to enlist Nas. Skillz recalled to Billboard magazine:

"Nas heard the song, loved it, and then Robin [told him], 'Nas, I've covered the relationship stuff but I'd love to address what's going on in the world today and everything that everyone's going through.'"
  • When Nas sent back a verse, it was so powerful that Skillz decided to cut out the instrumentation. "We took out the entire track and just let Nas open up the song a cappella and speak that truth," he explained.
