Songfacts®:

  • This electro-pop ballad is the first single from Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn's fifth studio album, Body Talk Pt. 1. Robyn co-wrote the song with Patrik Berger, who also produced the track. Berger's other productions include "I Love It" by Icona Pop and "Boom Clap" by Charli XCX.
  • In this tale of heartache Robyn is watching the man she loves dancing with another woman. He knows Robyn is watching, but keeps cozying up to the other girl anyway. Robyn said on her website the song was inspired by "sad, gay disco anthems" like Ultravox's "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" and songs by Sylvester and Donna Summer.
  • Robyn explained the song's meaning to Pop Justice: "I think 'Dancing On My Own' is totally from me just being in clubs and going out and dancing a lot, and seeing people and thinking, 'what are they doing here?' All these people with their hopes and their dreams about their big nights out, 'look at me I'm dressed up and dancing.' There are so many hopes that people have when they go out. I'm fascinated by club culture at the moment. My boyfriend used to be a doorman so I'll hear stories about how people act when they're insecure, or how they act when they're drunk. Clubs are like the new church for people - it's where you go to feel a part of something bigger than yourself."
  • Robyn told Billboard magazine that Body Talk Pt. 1 is primarily "a record about the dancefloor." She added: "It's a really important place for my generation. It's the new church. It's where people go to experience something bigger than themselves."
  • The music critics of UK newspaper The Guardian voted this as their best track of 2010.
  • This features in a memorable scene during the third episode ("All Adventurous Women Do") of the HBO series Girls when Hannah and Marnie dance their frustrations out after a harrowing night during which Hannah finds out that her college boyfriend, Elijah, is gay. The creator of the hit series, Lena Dunham wrote the scene with this song in mind.

Other TV shows it featured on included Gossip Girl, Orange Is The New Black and RuPaul's Drag Race, plus the movies Teen Spirit and Long Shot.
  • British singer Calum Scott performed the song as part of his audition on Britain's Got Talent in 2015. He finished sixth out of twelve contestants in the final with 8.2% of the vote. Scott later independently released the song in March 2016 and it became a hit for the singer earning him a record deal with Capitol Records. "Personally, I've always fallen for the straight guys, so the lyrics alone speak to my life," the gay singer said.

Calum Scott's version peaked at #2 in the UK and #93 in the US, where it became the victory song for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022. His version ended up blowing past Robyn's in streams, racking up over a billion on Spotify by 2023.
  • The Vitamin String Quartet performed a classical version of "Dancing on My Own" for Netflix' Bridgerton period drama. The instrumental plays during the fourth episode of season 2 when Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Lady Kate Sharma dance together for the first time.

Vitamin String Quartet released a music video for their instrumental cover of "Dancing on My Own" on April 1, 2022.
  • The song took on new meaning during the 2020 pandemic, when many of us had to dance - and do just about everything else - on our own during lockdown. Robyn posted a video of her performing the song, shooting it herself using a selfie stick.
  • If there's anyone who can dance on his own like no one is watching, it's David Byrne, whose erratic moves are a centerpiece of the groundbreaking 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, where he wears a big suit while fronting his band Talking Heads. Robyn paid tribute to Byrne by wearing a similarly oversized suit when she sang "Dancing On My Own" at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, held at Radio City Music Hall on February 14, 2025 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live. Byrne made a surprise appearance in his big suit, joining Robyn on the song for some delightfully awkward dancing.
