Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Robyn turns off her love deflector and lets someone into her life. Now it's this person's turn to show her what love is all about.
  • "Show Me Love" was one of the first songs written and produced by Max Martin, who became one of the most reliable hitmakers of the next few decades. His other big client at the time was Backstreet Boys, who were ascending the charts with Martin songs like "We've Got It Goin' On" and "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)." A lot of the musical elements you hear in "Show Me Love," like the multi-tracked vocals and synthesizer stabs, show up in the 1997 Backstreet Boys song "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)."
  • Robyn (full name: Robyn Carlsson) wrote this song with Max Martin. Both are Swedish, a country with a rich tradition of pop music rooted in Abba. "Show Me Love" is the kind of singable, generic title that works wonders for Martin. Who can't relate to that? Robyn's verse lyrics frame her as a woman who is going through a positive change in her life, but it's short on details, which makes it more universally relatable (note how the gender of her love interest is never revealed) and opens up more room for the chorus, where the title gets a lot of repetitions.
  • The song first appeared on Robyn's 1995 debut album Robyn Is Here but wasn't released as a single until 1997 after her song "Do You Know (What It Takes)" - also produced by Max Martin - took took off in America. Robyn became an international star with a string of hits throughout Europe (especially in her native Sweden), but "Show Me Love" was her last substantial hit in America (her song "Do You Really Want Me (Show Respect)" got some airplay there in 1998). Her best known song internationally is "Dancing On My Own," released in 2010.
  • In 1993, the American singer Robin S. (Robin Stone) had a hit with a different song called "Show Me Love" that was written and produced by two Americans with R&B backgrounds. Both songs were huge in the clubs and have beats that lived on long after the songs faded. Beyoncé used the Robin S. "Show Me Love" beat for her 2022 smash "Break My Soul."
  • The music video mostly takes place on a white backdrop, a look that was big at the time. It's loaded with lots of attractive extras, presumably making love connections. The director was Kevin Bray, who made videos for the likes of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion before moving into movies and TV. He directed the 2002 film All About The Benjamins.
