Songfacts®:

  • Atop a shuffling country-rock beat, this song finds Rodney Atkins reassuring the listener that despite all the chaos of late, he or she is doing it right:

    "Yeah, you're doing it right
    You're shinin' in your light
    You ain't losing your mind
    No everything's fine
    You're dropping the ball
    But you're picking it up
You stumbling and fallin' and falling in love
    You're hangin' on tight
    You're prayin' each night
    You're doin' it right."

The song was penned by Nashville songwriter Jay Knowles (George Strait's "She'll Leave You With A Smile," Alan Jackson's "So You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore"). According to Atkins, the song made a big impact on his life, and he knew as soon as he heard it that he had to cut it.
  • Atkins said the song's message is one that is special to him. "'Doin' It Right' is a song that I need to hear every day," he stated. "It's a prayer, and a moment. It's a song about not only my faith in God but also God's faith in me."

He added, "It's a song I needed to hear. It's a song about spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection."
