Songfacts®:

  • Britain's favorite Australian arrived in London as an art student in 1952, and never returned. As well as an artist and TV presenter, Rolf Harris has had a sporadic songwriting and recording career. Sporadic is certainly a word that should be applied to this song, because in December 2009 when he appeared on the BBC Breakfast news programme he told presenters Bill Turnbull and Sian Lloyd that it took him twenty years to write it! The inspiration to what he said was initially a boring song was to rope in lead guitarist Rick Parfitt.
  • "Christmas In The Sun" begins with a ukulele introduction before exploding into a rock track with a typical Status Quo riff. Though obviously a fun track, Harris said it was inspired by his boyhood memories when it was a hundred and four degrees Fahrenheit in the shade, and after his mother had cooked the dinner it was too hot to stay in the house. Asked if he preferred the Australian style Christmas, Rolf said he had lived in Britain for most of his life and could no longer cope with the extremes of the Australian climate, which is undoubtedly true, but from the sentiments expressed therein it is clear that like most immigrants wherever they transplant themselves, there is a part of him that will always belong to his native land.

At the end, the song contains a couple of puns which Quo fans (if no one else) will appreciate! >>>
