Songfacts®:

  • "Beautiful Stephen" examines the unique nature of life in a Catholic boys' school. The song is loosely set at one that singer-guitarists Fran Keaney, Tom Russo, and his bassist brother Joe Russo attended in Brunswick, Melbourne. "It's a story about a schoolboy falling in love with his best friend and it not ending well," Tom Russo told Uncut magazine. "It's based on different people."

"You forget about how strange things were that you took for granted back then," he added. "After experiencing that school, I feel like you're more well-adjusted if you go to school with boys and girls like the rest of society."
