Songfacts®:

  • The debut solo single from The xx singer/guitarist Romy Madley Croft, "Lifetime" was written in lockdown and released on September 29, 2020.
  • "Lifetime" is essentially an end-times love song backed by a club-ready sound.

    And if you're ever lonely
If you can't find the way
If this world comes to an end
I wanna be there with you

Madley Croft explained in a press release that as she sat in her room during lockdown she started thinking about how short life really is and how everything was changing. The singer determined to enjoy the moment more, take some risks, and go for it while she can.

"I think subconsciously the upbeat energy of the song is a reaction to the stillness and anxiety I was feeling in lockdown," Madley Croft explained. "I was missing the pace of the outside world, spontaneous moments, the euphoria of dance floors, of love and connections with my friends and family. I realized when everything was stripped back, simple moments of togetherness, meant the most to me."

She added: "My intention with this song is to celebrate life, togetherness, to appreciate the moment before it's gone."
  • Romy Madley Croft produced the song with frequent Ed Sheeran collaborator Fred Gibson, her xx bandmate Jamie xx, Bronx rapper Jay Anonymous, and Marta Salogni (Dream Wife, The Orielles).
