Songfacts®:

  • The "Walking Wounded" lyrics were written by Johnny Cash during a time in his life when he was reading up about the PTSD suffered by Vietnam War veterans as well as enduring his own physical pain. His eldest daughter Rosanne Cash interpreted her father's poem for Johnny Cash: Forever Words, a collaborative album consisting of songs created from a collection of the country legend's writings.

"There's so much pain in these lyrics, and they're unrelentingly dark," Rosanne said. "I really tried to feel what [my father] would have thought about it, and it felt like a collaboration. I think he'd be proud of it. I am."
  • The poignant black and white video was filmed at Johnny Cash's childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas.
