Songfacts®:

  • Rotterdam Termination Source is a Dutch Techno group lead by DJ Maurice Steenbergen. The group is most famous for this minimalist single, which topped the charts in the Netherlands and Denmark and reached #27 in the UK Singles Chart.
  • Steenbergen was inspired by his local club scene to pen this song. He told Mojo magazine November 2011: "A friend took me to a rave in 1991. That was it. I saw the first acid house as it evolved into techno. I was intrigued by how people were dancing by bouncing on the their feet Three months later I came across the poing sample, this bouncy sound. I hooked up six months of my Roland 909 drum machine programming underneath."
  • English football team West Bromwich Albion F.C.'s "Boing Boing" crowd chant, is reportedly based on this track.
  • The song is probably the best known example of the gabber sound, a loud and often aggressive style of techno music that originated in Rotterdam. An important element of gabber is a distorted Roland 909 bass drum, overdriven to the point where it becomes a square wave and makes a recognizably melodic tone.
