Songfacts®:

  • Orbison wrote this song with Will Jennings and J.D. Souther shortly before his untimely death in 1988. The trio also wrote "We'll Take the Night," and both songs ended up on Orbison's posthumous release King Of Hearts. Souther told us: "He died not very long after he had recorded those songs. But the song 'Coming Home' is really good, and it turned out to be kind of prophetic. It alluded to death and going home that way. And sure enough, to everyone's shock and sadness, he did soon afterwards."
