Songfacts®:

  • This was the last chart single for the group before lead singer Chaka Khan (born Yvette Stevens) left for a solo career. On this track, she sings about a man who makes her feel so good, that no other can come close.
  • Producer Quincy Jones wanted this for Michael Jackson's Thriller album, and almost got it. Rufus keyboardist David Wolinski wrote the song. The group didn't like it but recorded it anyway. It was released as a single when Wolinski threatened to pull it off the album and give it to Jackson and Jones. >>>

  • Early in the band's career, Roger Linn nearly joined Rufus as a touring guitarist. Later, "Ain't Nobody" became one of the first songs ever written to the beat of his invention - the LM-1 Drum, the world's first programmable, sampled-sound drum machine. In this case the machine was used to create the keyboard loop. John Robinson played live drums and overdubbed the fills.

As for why Linn didn't join Rufus, he explained: "Into Rufus' fame, I auditioned for touring guitarist and was accepted. However, I rejected their offer because they weren't paying enough. I was never asked about singing."
  • In 1989 a remixed version by Frankie Knuckles reached #6 in the UK.
  • In 1997 rapper LL Cool J topped the UK charts (#46 in US) with his interpolation of the song. It became a hit after being featured in the movie Beavis And Butthead Do America.
  • In 2003 British pop band Liberty X reached #3 in the UK with "Be Nobody," a merging of the lyrics from "Ain't Nobody" and the music from Human League's "Being Boiled."
  • 12 year old British singer Jasmine Thompson recorded a cover in 2013 after she was discovered singing on YouTube. Her version was featured in a TV commercial for Sainsbury's and charted in the Top 40 of the UK singles chart.

  • Pnw Dj from Washington Chaka Kahns version is a big girl song...grown woman status. Love MJ but can't imagine the 80s without 'Ain't Nobody ' by Chaka...just saying.
  • Terry M from Tacoma Wa.Could Michael have sung, "and a love so deep we can not measure"? Too bad we'll never know.
  • Markantney from BiloxeFeb 2015,

Stacey, I agree MJ would've knocked this out the park, ala "Rock With You" and "Off The Wall" but I don't see him topping Chaka's Whalling and Riffing in the song? He can't hit those notes; which kinda make the song.

MJ would've had a smoother version but he'd killed it too.
  • Dryattz from Atlanta, GaThis song has one of the most amazing minimalist sax parts. Two notes at 3:40, perfectly placed and performed. Two more at 3:48. Oh, to be so eloquent!
  • Stacey from Philadelphia, Pai think this one of the best love songs ever written its just perfect. MJ would do it even more Justice
  • Massimo from New York, NyIt's not a drum machine, JR played Live drums there.
  • Matt from Raleigh, NcYikes - can you imagine if MJ had sung this? "Thriller" would be much more a monster album. I can definitely see MJ doing this - very percussive vocals, funky groove; it might have replaced "Baby Be Mine"
  • Zigmars from Riga, EuropeOne of the essential songs of the 80th!
  • Shonda from Los Angeles, CaI can't imagine Michael Jackson singing this song.
  • Alan from Singapore, SingaporeThis song was featured and also include in the soundtrack of a breakdance movie, Breakin' in 1984
  • Dave from Cardiff, WalesTwice a UK hit single for Rufus/Chaka Khan - originally made No.21 in 1983. A remix later peaked at UK No.7 in 1989. In 1997, the song was also covered by LL Cool J, whose version went to UK No.1 after its' inclusion in the Beavis & Butthead Do America film soundtrack
