  • Back in the early 2010s, Russell Dickerson was a struggling singer-songwriter playing the club circuit. When he broke up with his girlfriend, Kailey Seymour, Dickerson, hoped to find his future wife out on the road, but the Almighty had other ideas. The singer reunited with Kailey and they married in 2013. In this song, Dickerson commits himself to giving his wife the world after recognizing divine intervention brought them together.

"I feel like it was God who changed my mind, that convinced me that this was my wife," he told Billboard. "As soon as I broke up with her in college, all the peace left my body. And that's just a spiritual thing, like I was being convinced that she's my wife, this is happening, we're doing it."
  • Dickerson wrote "God Gave Me A Girl" with Ashley Gorley ("Take My Name," "She Had Me At Heads Carolina"), Zach Crowell ("Body Like A Back Road," "Waves") and Chase McGill ("Lose It," "5 Foot 9") during a writing camp at Gorley's Middle Tennessee farm.

The song came on the second or third day of the retreat after Zach Crowell suggested "God Gave Me a Hometown" as a potential title. As they started playing with the idea, Dickerson turned it into "God Gave Me a Girl."

"I love alliteration," he explained to Billboard, "and my reputation precedes myself as the love song guy."
  • Kailey has been Dickerson's muse for a trove of love songs. They include "Yours," "Blue Tacoma," "Every Little Thing," "Love You Like I Used To" and "Home Sweet."
  • Triple Tigers released "God Gave Me a Girl" as the second single from Russell Dickerson's self-titled third album on November 18, 2022.
  • The song "I Wonder," which precedes "God Gave Me a Girl" on the album's tracklist, tells the story of Dickerson and Kailey breaking up for a season. "I really do spend a lot of time in sequencing stuff like that," he told PopCulture. "Then there's 'I Wonder,' which is about me and my wife breaking up, and then the next song right after is 'God Gave Me a Girl' and there was that snap aha moment of, 'What am I doing? I got to go back and get this girl.' That's just those little sequencing moments like that."
