Songfacts®:

  • The first single from Ryan Adams Prisoner album, "Doomsday" was released on January 19, 2017, the day before Donald Trump was inaugurated as president of the United States. Adams is no fan of Trump, but the song is not political. "My love, do you love me now 'til doomsday comes," he asks, a heart-rending sentiment in the wake of his breakup with his wife Mandy Moore - they split while he was making the album.
  • The song went through several iterations, including a punk version, before Adams found the sound he was looking for. "I found the thread of disappointment I was looking for in the song and it really worked," he told the CBC.

He recorded the song on a break from touring at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
