Songfacts®:

  • In this reggae-flavored number, frontwoman Sade Adu sings of a male figure who can be the father of a woman's child and a strong male role model, without necessary being a life mate. Adu was married to Spanish film director Carlos Pliego for six years in the 1990s and has said that she would not marry again. A subsequent affair with a Jamaican musician produced her daughter, Ila, in 1996, but ended unhappily. Adu has since been in a long-term relationship with former fireman and Royal Marine Ian Watts, of whom she said to The Sunday Times: "Ian is Ila's dad, really. He does all the things a dad would do, and she really looks up to him."
  • Sade's daughter Ila Adu is one of the credited vocalists on this song.
  • The music video, directed by Sophie Muller, follows Sade Adu through her daily domestic tasks. Muller also helmed the clip for the album's title track.
