Songfacts®:

  • Sammy Hagar's baby who was on fire in this song was his first wife, Betsy, whom he married back in 1968 when he was just 21. They split up in the early '90s, and in 1995 he married his second wife, Kari.
  • The line, "We go out driving in my 6.6" refers to the engine size (6.6 liter/400 cid) commonly used in the Pontiac Trans Am. Sammy wrote a song a few years earlier called "Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)" in which he first alludes to the 6.6 size engine. Sammy loves Trans Ams, especially red ones. >>>

  • "Baby's On Fire" is on Sammy Hagar's 1981 solo album Standing Hampton, which includes his crowd-pleaser "There's Only One Way To Rock." Four years later, Hagar joined Van Halen, replacing David Lee Roth as lead singer.

  • Jerry Schimelfening from Sterling Heights MichiganHis album cover from the album Street Machine has him sitting on a Red Trans Am with the license plate IEATZ28. He also later had a red 1979 Trans Am. "6.6" refers to the size of the engine in the Trans Am. 6.6 liters equals 400 cubic inches. This is the Pontiac 400 V-8 or the also available 403 Oldsmobile V-8 which Sammy probably had in his California plated Trans Am.
