Songfacts®:

  • Sammy Hagar has introduced this song in concert by saying it's about "being born," adding that it's "very spiritual."

He wrote the song on his own; it finds him soaking in the wonders of nature and being fully alive, like the eagles soaring overhead. Hagar is a bon vivant known for his relentless optimism and energy. "Eagles Fly" is an expression of his worldview.
  • Hagar was a member of Van Halen when he released Eagles Fly on his 1987 solo album I Never Said Goodbye. He joined Van Halen in 1985 and released his first album with the group, 5150, in 1986. He still owed and album to his old label, Geffen Records, so he used a break in Van Halen's schedule to put it together. "Give to Live" was the album's first single, followed by "Eagles Fly." Earlier in 1987, Hagar also released a single for the soundtrack of the movie Over The Top called "Winner Takes It All."
  • Eddie Van Halen played bass on this song and also added some guitar using his famous tapping technique. Eddie co-produced the entire I Never Said Goodbye album along with Hagar and David Thoener.

This was just the second time Eddie Van Halen played bass on a song; the first was on Hagar's "Winner Takes It All."
  • Along with "I Can't Drive 55" and "There's Only One Way To Rock," "Eagles Fly" is one of three Sammy Hagar solo songs that often made it into Van Halen's setlists. The song wasn't a big hit but is one of Hagar's favorites, plus it features Eddie Van Halen. Hagar often plays it at his solo shows as well.
  • In 2023, "Eagles Fly" was included on the reissue of Van Halen's live album Live: Right Here, Right Now.
