Songfacts®:

  • This is a story of a teenage romance, written from the young girl's point of view. The sense of the joy of discovery of the simple pleasure of dating is the key to the lyrics here.
  • This cheerful song with the mildest of calypso feel was written and produced by Chris Andrews who also wrote other UK Top 20 hits for Sandie Shaw such as "I'll Stop At Nothing," "Message Understood" and "Nothing Come Easy." In addition, two years previously he'd written Adam Faith's final UK Top 10 hit "The First Time" and later in 1965 he wrote and sang himself a #3 hit "Yesterday Man."
  • Sandie Shaw was born Sandra Goodrich in 1947 in Dagenham, London. She was a 17-year-old machine operator when Adam Faith's manager Eve Taylor discovered her. She signed with Pye in 1964 and immediately recorded a #1 hit with Bacharach & David's "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me." "Long Live Love" was her second #1 and her final one was the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest winning "Puppet On A String." For two decades until Madonna's third British chart-topper "True Blue," she was the only solo female singer to manage 3 #1 British hits. Despite her chart success in the UK during the British invasion, she had little impact on the American charts. In 1984 she teamed up with The Smiths and had #27 UK hit with "Hand In Glove."
  • Sandie Shaw's trademark of always singing barefoot on stage was initially a publicity stunt stunt devised by her manager Eve Taylor.
  • Tracey Ullman covered this on her 1983 album You Broke My Heart In 17 Places and again in 1992 by actor Nick Berry who reached #47 on the UK singles chart with his version.
