Songfacts®:

  • This song about a French romeo was originally recorded by the German singer Manuela in 1967. Her version was written by Christian Bruhn, and Georg Buschor. Two years later, Sandie Shaw recorded an English version with lyrics by Peter Callender ("The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde"), ("Billy Don't Be A Hero"). Shaw's interpretation reached #6 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming her eighth and final Top 10 hit single.
  • Sandie Shaw was "arrested" in Paris for being dressed up like a French policeman, while promoting the song. She told reporters the next day: "I was clowning around near the President's pad when these policemen descended on me and I was whipped away to a police station. Everybody was very sweet when they found out that I was genuinely looking for a Monsieur Dupont. It was very nice. I even sang a little of the song."
