Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening track of Santana's In Search of Mona Lisa EP. The record was born out of Carlos Santana's first experience seeing Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece at Paris Louvre Museum, when the woman in the painting spoke to the musician telepathically, then months later returned in a dream. When Santana awoke from his slumbers, the lyrics to what would become the songs "In Search of Mona Lisa" and "Do You Remember Me" were fully formed in his mind.

"It was the first time that I ever woke up and lyrics were there in a tangible way," he recalled. "I could just grab them and write the songs."
  • Santana and his band recorded the song with Rick Rubin at the renowned producer's Shangri-la Studio in Malibu. "Do You Remember Me" was captured in a single take.

"Miles Davis and Bob Dylan always said that the first take is the best, and I have to agree," Santana said. "You can hear the innocence in the music. That's a nutrient that's missing on this planet right now."
