Songfacts®:

  • This Mariachi song features Carlos' father Jose on vocals. Jose led a local Mariachi band and inspired the young Carlos to learn violin, which he detested, and guitar, which he didn't. The younger Santana explained to Mojo magazine November 2008 why he chose to cover this song: "My dad used to serenade my mom with it after a fight. Four o' clock in the morning, blocks away you'd hear him singing. My mom would get up, open the curtain a little and say 'It's him.' Then I knew it was gonna be all right."
  • The Mexican composer Gonzalo Curiel wrote this song in 1936. Curiel wrote the music for many films and also became an orchestra conductor.
  • Among the many artists to record this song are Eydie Gorme, Desi Arnaz, Ray Conniff and Henry Mancini.
