Songfacts®:

  • This empowering ballad starts off with Sara Bareilles discussing the Bible's shaming of Eve before lamenting the injustices against women in society.

All my, my, my, my armor comes from you
Oh, no no, my, my, my, my armor comes from you
    You make me stronger, stronger
    Now, hand me my armor

Bareilles finds strength in the solidarity of her sisters.
  • The song was birthed in the wake of the fear Bareilles and her contemporaries were feeling when Donald Trump was elected US President in 2016. However, it evolved over the following two years in the wake of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements against inappropriate sexual behavior. Bareilles explained to Billboard that it changed into an account of her "experience as a woman and as an artist and a community member."
  • Originally Bareilles was not going to release the song until 2019, but when psychology professor Dr. Christine Blasey Ford stood before a Senate Judiciary Committee on September 18, 2018 and testified that Supreme Court Judge nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her at a high school party in the 1980s, she knew she needed to drop the empowerment anthem sooner rather than later.

"I was really moved by the experience of watching the Kavanaugh hearings," she explained. "This song felt like it wanted to belong to this moment in time."
  • Sara Bareilles was especially interested in talking about the way it feels to be human on Amidst the Chaos. The singer explained to HMV.com why she considers this song to be the centerpiece of the record.

"That's a track about the new feminist movement and what it's like to be 40 years old and readdressing my thoughts about what I'm allowed to do and be in society," Bareilles said. "You can't unsee what you've seen, it's like coming out of The Matrix. Re-defining myself, that's a big theme."
