Songfacts®:

  • "Queen Of Mean" is performed in Descendants 3 by Canadian actress and singer Sarah Jeffery, who plays Princess Audrey. In the first Descendants movie, Audrey's boyfriend Ben fell in love with Mal (Maleficent's daughter), after she cast a spell on him. In the early scenes of Descendants 3, Ben, who is now king of Auradon, proposes to Mal as Audrey looks on. We see the princess crying and walking around the room as she sings:

I waited patiently for my time
    But when it finally came
    He called her name
And now I feel this overwhelming pain

Having contemplated the loss of her chance to become queen, Audrey breaks into the Museum of Cultural History and takes the Queen's crown. However, Maleficent's scepter takes hold of Audrey's anger, her appearance grows darker, and she changes into a villain.

I never thought of myself as mean
I always thought that I'd be the queen
    And there's no in between
  • The song was written and produced by Antonina Armato and Tim James. The pair were responsible for many of Miley Cyrus' early hits, including "7 Things" and "Can't Be Tamed."
  • American businesswoman and real estate entrepreneur Leona Helmsley was the original Queen of Mean. She earned her nickname as a result of her harsh persona and tyrannical behavior towards her employees. Being a billionaire did not stop Helmsley from keeping her spending on a tight rein, and she had a spell in prison for small and obvious acts of tax evasion. During her trial, a former housekeeper testified that Helmsley said: "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes."
