Songfacts®:

  • In this song Sarah McLachlan mourns for her mother, who died of cancer just before Christmas 2002. The singer-songwriter told Between The Lines News Issue 1448: "I guess my idea was to remember her in a really beautiful moment as opposed to focusing on the negative, which I'm very prone to do. It's a reminder to myself to, in the hardest times and darkest hours, try to find something positive."
  • McLachlan added in the same interview that it was a challenge to pen this song, "I'm not used to writing with any kind of theme in mind."
