Songfacts®:

  • Jehnny Beth kicks out at the church here over a relentless post punk groove. The song was written in response to widespread religious protests against France's legalization of gay marriage in 2013. "The idea that there's only one way of having a family is, for me, unimaginable," the Savages singer told The Guardian. "I was so ashamed of my country for that."
  • Beth was raised a Catholic in her native France. When she moved to London with her English partner she put an end to her Catholic guilt. "It was really engraved in my brain," Beth said. "I didn't feel good about my own desires, or finding any kind of pleasure."
