Songfacts®:

  • Saweetie (birth name Diamonté Harper) is an American rapper, singer and songwriter born in Santa Clara, California, to a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father. Diamonté was close to her grandmother, who gave her the nickname Saweetie; she later chose it as her stage name.

Saweetie drew inspiration from female rappers and posted short raps on Instagram. One of the clips featured her rapping over the beat from Khia's "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)," which would eventually turn into her debut single, "Icy Grl." That song's Poster Child-directed music video went viral on social media and led to a contract with Warner Bros. Records in partnership with Artistry Worldwide and her own label, Icy Records.
  • This summer anthem finds Saweetie describing the type of man she goes for. Basically her ideal guy is a wealthy ("eight-figure") black man who is well-endowed.
  • Saweetie wrote the song with Atlanta producer London On Da Track, whose other credits include Rich Gang's "Lifestyle," Drake's "Sneakin," and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's "Swervin." His production features a prominent sample of Petey Pablo's classic 2004 hit, "Freek-A-Leek."
  • Saweetie recruited Jhené Aiko and City Girls' Yung Miami for a remix. Aiko kicks off the new version with some raunchy bars before Saweetie raps one of her two original verses. Miami then takes the baton to spit a closing verse.
  • Saweetie first released the song as part of her 2019 Icy EP. The record title was an ongoing theme in the singer's early work. She named her debut single "Icy Girl," and in February 2018, launched her own record label, Icy Records. Sitting down with Audacy's Julia and Bru, the California artist started the interview by answering a question posed by H.E.R., who asked Saweetie, "What does it mean to be icy?"

The rapper responded, "Well I always tell people, 'Icy' is not jewelry, it's not what you're wearing, it's not like you're look. 'Icy' is a mentality. All my 'Icy' girls know that they're hustlers... that's what I love about this event like they're go-getters, they're good people, so being 'Icy' falls under those categories."
